Monday's episode is the 2nd installment of Critical Incident, the segment of the podcast dedicated to sharing stories about working in medicine.
This one is about a call I ran 15 or 20 years ago. The patient coded unexpectedly after we had arrived on scene. He was using the bathroom (against the advice of all of us) when he arrested and fell against the inside of the bathroom door, nearly making it impossible for us to get to him in a timely manner.
The one saving grace in this whole debacle (commonly known as a "charlie foxtrot," code for "cluster fuck") was that he had an ICD. While we were all scrambling around more or less wasting time, the little implanted defibrillator was working diligently to restart his heart which, SPOILER, it did successfully!
The last Critical Incident segment very quickly became the most downloaded episode (since switching to Spotify) so I'm feeling enthusiastic about making more of these episodes.
